Daddy Day!

Tuesday I had to work, so the girls had a "Daddy Day." Rarely do they spend any time with just him, so I think they had a good time. Guess where they wanted to go? You got it. And with no prompting from me at all, they brought along the camera!

No amount of begging or pleading would convince Bobby to write about these pictures, so I offer you the next best thing: Macy narrating.

"We were about to go in to Worlds of Fun."

"Me and Kaylin before we went in, in the parking lot. I went like this (held out arms) and took it."

"Me and Kaylin on the log ride after the big hill. It was so fun riding by ourselves."

"We were about to go on the Scrambler and about to move and it was so much fun. It swirls and it looks like you are going to hit somebody."

"Me and Kaylin on the Wacky Worm. We saw in the Apple on the ground the sunglasses Kaylin lost."

"That's us on the Flying Dutchman. It is awesome!"

"Daddy was pouting because he was a single rider on the Octupus."

"That's us on the Sea Dragon when it was going up on our side. It goes back and forth and it tickles my tummy."

"Daddy was sitting in front of us and we were sitting behind him on the Sea Dragon."

Sounds like they had a fun day on their Daddy Day!

Skirt search is off

Thank you, Target, for realizing that some people prefer skirts over slacks, maxi dresses and long tailored shorts.

Rant about back to school shopping

Something I don't understand about school shopping--it's the beginning of August. Why go crazy buying fall/winter school clothes? Especially when those same clothes will be on sale this fall too. It's not like today is the only day they can get them! My kids grow at unpredictable rate, so why would I go crazy buying jeans and sweaters that in four months might not fit them and/or they won't like?

Yesterday I was trying on some things at Target. I could hear a mom and her daughter in one of the fitting rooms, arguing over some jeans. The mom thought they were too tight, the daughter thought they were fine. My thought? Is she wearing them to school next week? Probably not. So in five months who knows how those jeans were going to fit her. I'd rather just wait until October to get jeans to see what size they are then.

And another thing I am not happy about school shopping--I like skirts. Fun and bright colors, patterns, and all that. Apparently, this year, skirts are OUT. I have been to about five stores lately, looking for a cute, fun skirt for the first day of school. Nothing. All I could find was slacks and maxi dresses.

The problem with both slacks and maxi dresses? I am a short person, in case you haven't noticed that lately. Slacks, even purchased in Petite sizes, inevitably have to be hemmed. Since I can't sew, my mom has to hem the slacks. Maxi dresses are so popular right now, but again, I am a short person. I tried one on yesterday, and there was about four inches that just dragged along the ground. And in case you haven't noticed, I am not the most graceful person. It wouldn't be pretty if I had a dress that dragged the ground.

Tomorrow I'm back on the skirt hunt. I scoured the Sunday paper and came up with a few leads on skirts. I'll keep you posted.

FYI--shopping for the girls back to school outfit was so much simpler.

Mommy Day with Kaylin

Friday was Mommy Day with Kaylin! Last week was Macy's turn, and of course Kaylin had to do exactly what big sister did--a trip to Worlds. I tried hard to talk her into something else, but no luck. It was much hotter this trip, and we got miserable pretty quickly. The Viking Voyager (log ride) was closed for some reason, and she was disappointed.

Here we are in the parking lot, about to go in: It's 9:50 a.m. and already 82 degrees.

Kaylin driving the taxi cars. I push the gas pedal and she steers.

Both of us in the taxi cars...

Snack time! Cookie and water. We sat under a tree and tiny acorns kept falling on us.

Us in the front seat of the Wacky Worm. We rode it twice! She's tall enough to ride by herself and usually does, but since today was her special day she wanted me to ride with her.

See the sunglasses? Last time you'll see them. They were on my lap during the second Wacky Worm ride, and on the last turn, they fell out to the ground below, never to be seen again. I'll tell ya, that last turn really whips you around.

On the carousel.

Flying Dutchman. I could do without this ride--makes me dizzy. I tried to keep my eyes closed.

Octopus.

Look who we found working at Worlds that day, and look who was thrilled about having his picture taken! Right after this was taken, a call came in that someone passed out and he had to go. Drink water, people, that's all I'm saying!

In the car, ready to leave. It's now 12:45 pm, and 94 degrees.

Checking out herself in the mirror

We stopped at Wendy's before getting Macy from Mom's.

I think with the two Mommy Day posts I have put more pictures of myself on here than in the two years I've been blogging! I will go back to no pictures of myself for a while.

Fashion, Kaylin Style.

"Mom, can I play outside?"
"Sure, Kaylin, but put some shorts on under that dress. It's too short to play outside in."

Kaylin has always been our, ahem, spirited child. She really likes to dress herself sometimes, and this is an example of some of the concoctions she comes up with. She loves wearing boots with shorts or capri's, and yesterday wore her Easter dress around all afternoon. Whatever floats her boat, I say.

I'm really not an uptight mom to get bent out of shape about what she is wearing. Once I let her go to the grocery store with wings on and a tutu. Soon enough she will be self-conscious about her hair, her clothes, her body, and I want to hold that off as long as possible. I sometimes do put my foot down, but otherwise I wouldn't want to deprive the world of this:

Summer, where did you go???

We've just been enjoying the last few days of summer...swimming, hanging out, having fun.

Went to Taco Tuesday yesterday, and while there, had the following conversation:

Me: Leah (one of their babysitters) is going to be on the dance team at KU. Maybe one day you'll be on the dance team for Mizzou.
Macy: (nods vigorously) I can't wait!
Bobby: (very pointed look in my direction) Or maybe she'll be on the basketball team for Mizzou! Wouldn't that be awesome?
Macy: (face drops and she gives him the thumbs down sign) Not awesome.

Sorry Bobby--I don't think you are going to win that battle. Only time will tell.

This morning the girls and I went down to Crown Center to see the Lego exhibit and to Kaleidoscope. As usual, they had a great time. It's so awesome that Kaleidoscope is here, and that it is free.

Did you know that school starts two weeks from today? Where did it go? Seriously?

And just so you know, I stapled my hand today. It hurt really bad, and it still does. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Nelson!

Saturday loomed ahead with nothing to do. Hanging out at the house was not an option, and I try to avoid Oceans and Worlds on the weekends. Free (or cheap) was important. On a whim, the girls and I headed out to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. Never having been there, and lived in KC my whole life, i thought I'd impart some culture on the girls.

On the way, I gave the girls the rules: no touching the art, no running, no loud voices, etc. Once there, the friendly man at the info desk gave us the kids highlights. I also realized I left out an important rule: no giggling or pointing at the naked statues, and there were many.

The girls were fabulous! We breezed through the museum, not looking at everything, but just looking at what the girls wanted to. Macy loved the Egyptian exhibit, and Kaylin liked the sculptures. I tend to like modern pieces better, so we checked out the new Bloch building. The girls were mesmerized by a wax statue of a police officer.

We had a wonderful picnic on the lawn of the Nelson, next to one of the famous shuttlecocks. The girls had butter sandwiches and I had pb&j. So fancy!

Of course, we had to shout in the shuttlecock to see if it echoed. It did.

On the front steps...

By one of the other shuttlecocks...

And a few shots of the top...

It was fun! We made it through a museum without the girls breaking anything or causing a ruckus, so I consider it a success--even if we didn't quite appreciate the works of art inside. Macy came home and started hanging up pictures on her "wall of art" in her room!
